Budgerigar Pet Portrait in Pencil
Pet Portrait Drawings in Graphite Pencil
This bird portrait is of a budgie named Gabo. The drawing was completed in 2009 and is drawn on paper with graphite pencils. Pencil used for this and all other pencil drawings are of artist quality. I prefer to use Staedtler or Derwent in a range of hardness from 7H to 8B. In addition to dog and cat portraits, I am delighted to create a pet portrait of any kind of pet, including birds.

Reference Photographs
The bird portrait developed from one photograph. The photo was quite clear and composition worked well so there was no need for major adjustments. The shadow behind the budgie was taken out and the background was kept white except the perch the budgie is sitting on. This was needed for adding context to the portrait. His beautiful wings and spots of colour were interpreted with pencil shading.
Choosing a Medium for your Portrait
It can be difficult to decide on what medium you prefer. I offer pet portraits in two different mediums: graphite pencil and acrylic paint. Pencil drawings are drawn on Fabriano paper and acrylic paintings are painted on stretched canvas. You will find more information on the two mediums, their qualities and advantages on the order information page of this website. I can also offer advice on mediums and size based on your photographs.
